EarTaping/Grooming

Ear Taping

EARTAPING VIDEO 1 intro and taping the ear flat at base

EARTAPING VIDEO 2 finish up on taping and folding the ear

EARTAPING VIDEO 3 bridging the ear

This video was made by Jill Gibbs at Perizad Chinese Cresteds this is very helpful for beginners who are learning to tape the ears.

(Please know there are several different methods of ear taping, and nothing is set in stone. So as your starting out you will have to do what you feel is most comfortable for you. Switch the tape 5-7 days dont let it get wet either so if you bathe remove the tape and clean out the ears. **Please understand its important to clean the inside of the ears because they can get wax build up or ear infections, also if the tape is on too long they can get sores from the tape, however in order for ears to be up for this breed, its important to tape them and be consistent unless the ears are naturally erect.

SUPPLIES:
Tampon (Dollar Store) Backer Rod (Foam you can buy at Home Depot in the Installation department)
NEXCARE flexible clear tape" you buy at CVS

INSTRUCTIONS
:

1)First, you cut two peices of the tape and then one long peice
EXAMPLE:

2) Next, you put the foam in the middle of the ear its called a "BACKER ROD" you can buy it at home depot, (comes in a plastic bag) or you can use a TAMPON serves the same purpose you can buy at a dollar store.
EXAMPLE:

3) Then, tape the edge of the ear around the backer rod so the tape goes around the ear. Do it for both ears. You have to make a Bridge other wise the ears can go to the side and the Bridge helps them to stand straight up.
EXAMPLE:

4) Finally, with the long peice, you tape one side of the ear to the other to make an H. (Make sure to not get any of his hair caught int he tape) It does take a lot of practice, ask your vet to show you, if need be. Put two fingers under the bridge to make sure that the hair is not in the tape. Note: Sometimes you have to tape anywhere from now to 7 months of age. EXAMPLES:

Skin Care For The Hairless

The skin of the Hairless type requires a lot of moisturizing with lotions that you you use on yourself. This breed is allergic to Lanolin so always check the ingredients. You can use baby oil or Nivea face cream to massage into the hairless parts to keep the skin smooth and kept nice. There are several products to use in case your crested has a breakout or blackheads, pimples or boils. I use Oil Control Lotion which absorbs oil on the skin's surface. You can purchase this product at www.dermalogica.com great for dry skin. Some other Great products for the skin and works GREAT and is cheap, is Clean and Clear only ($3.99) and is from CVS. Also ONLY use Aveeno Original Moisturizer right after the bath. I use this instead of dog shampoo: Perfect for THL!!! Also some other great products can be found at my HollyWoof site at this Link under Grooming http://hollywoof.us/category_37/Grooming.htm HappyTail products are excellent for all hair types and really works wonders for this breed including skin treatments.

The one HUGE thing I can tell you, I've noticed that clean, clear skin starts with food...It's good for puppies all the way thru older dogs, so you dont' have to get a special puppy formula one. http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/dogformulas/PandD.html We also feed Bill Jac which is a holistic food either food I highly reccomend.

Grooming procedure for the Hairless:

You will need a good-quality bristle brush, and a clippers. and I use a Whal Peanuts which I highly reccomend! You can purchase this at Sallys Beauty Supply to shave the face and body. Keep the Hairless type clean with frequent baths, and us a good shampoo followed by a moisturizer (you can also use baby lotion to moisturize the skin of the Hairless Chinese Crested.

• The crest, socks and plume should be blow-dried with a good bristle brush.

• When hair appears on the body of the Hairless type, you need to remove it.

• Remove the facial hair with a safety razor (Whal Peanuts) or an Oster No. 40 blade against the grain. You can also be used to remove body hair. Be careful when using a razor to remove the hair from a Chinese Crested. If you are at all apprehensive about using a razor, consult a professional groomer.

• Towel-dry and finish with a hair dryer on the crest, socks and plume.

Grooming procedure for the Powderpuff:

• You will need to brush the Powderpuff coat frequently with a bristle or pin brush.
Daily brushing may be necessary as the Chinese Crested puppy coat changes to the adult coat.

• Mats should be teased out with thumb and forefinger.

• When all mats are removed work through the coat with a bristle or pin brush.

• Tangles and mats may be found in the area between the front legs and the inside of the elbows.

• To keep the coat of the Powderpuff Chinese Crested looking nice bath regularly with a good-quality dog shampoo. Follow the bath with a blow-drying.

• After bathing, brushing and blow-drying, the face can be shaved using clippers (10 mm blade) Or the Whal Peanuts gets real close. Take a line from the outer corner of the eye to the ear and in a gentle curve from the ear down to the "Adam's apple." In the U.S., however, the Powderpuff face is not shaved.

• Check between the pads of the feet for felting and remove to prevent discomfort to the Powderpuff Chinese Crested when walking.

• Check the Powderpuff Chinese Crested' nails, ears and teeth. The nails should be moderately long.
