Health Concerns
The Chinese Crested is a rare dog and does not have a lot of health issues, which can be found in more popular Toy breeds. However it is always possible for genetic problems to come up. There are no 100% Guarantees that any breed can be clear of all hereditary defects and through health testing, and selective breedings as breeders we can help prevent future genetic problems from occurring by testing for those Genetic problems that are known to pop up in this breed. My breeding dogs were all very carefully selected and are free and clear of genetic hereditary defects. OFA can only be done at 12 months of age (1 years old) same as Cerf's. OFA Results are posted below. All my dogs were OFA tested Normal for Patella Luxation. Cerf's posted below all my dogs tested clear. PRA and PRAD coming soon!HEALTH CONCERNS:Generally healthy. Tooth problems and bad breath.Patellar LuxationAs with all other Toy Breeds, the Cresteds can be prone to patellar luxation. This inheritable condition is caused by shallow knee joints (stifles) and results in kneecaps that pop out of place. Its onset is often at a young age, and can cause temporary to permanent lameness based on the severity. Breeders concerned about the health of the breed have their stock certified free of patellar luxation and registered with the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA). Puppies and adults are vet checked thoroughly for Patella Luxation, heart murmurs, and hernia prior to leaving our home. We offer a 1 Year health Guarantee against serious genetic defects usually a problem that will occur within one year of age.
Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) PRA is a hereditary eye disease causing the breakdown of the cells of the retina. The breakdown is gradual leading to mid-life (age 5-7) blindness. Dry Eye (Keratoconjunctivitus sicca) While normal dog eyes are lustrous - dogs with dry eye have eyes lacking in luster and appear textured. This condition is caused by the lack of tear production. This can be due to lack of nerve stimulation of the tear glands, failure of the tear glands, or blockage of the ducts that carry the tears to the eyes. Full diagnosis can only be performed by a Veterinarian to determine the cause. Treatment will be dependent upon the cause and severity of the condition. GENERAL
Hairless Chinese Crested often lose their teeth. Experts say that the genetic information for dentition appears to be linked to that for hairlessness. Regular cleaning and check-ups by your veterinarian usually preserves the teeth for a longer period of time, but eventually the teeth are often lost. AllergiesSome Crested dogs are prone to allergies, especially if there skin isn't properly cared for. Many allergic reactions of the skin of Hairless Cresteds are caused by topical products containing lanolin (wool fat) and other sheep wool products. Some other allergies include Aloe vera gel and strong fragrances contained in skin care products.Vaccines Throughout the years,it has been known that some cresteds are allergic to Lyme and Lepto vaccines. This should be made aware of to the veterinarian before administration as now they have combo vaccinations and may contain these 2. Our vet gives our puppies the Coronovirus vaccine. As a matter of fact, I myself was contacted by a buyer with the horrific results of these vaccinations that were given to a hairless that she purchased from me who did start vomiting and getting real sick.The life-span of a Chinese Crested Dog can be quite impressive. Many well-cared-for and healthily-bred Cresteds live to see 15 years or more.RESULTS FOR OFA
