Pet Care

A CRATE-FULL PUPPY

The American Kennel Club encourages the use of crate training for puppies for these 3 reasons; -

1.It can greatly aid in house breaking

2. It gives them a safe place

3. It affords them a comfortable
and secure place to travel

A crate should allow your pet comfort and security, this should not be a place for punishment. A puppy should enjoy the time he spends in his crate. It is a time for rest and reassurance from activities and new experiences. Always choose a crate about the size of your puppy. Make there crate comfortable with a blanket or pillow and some toys or stuffed animal. Place a Pee-Pad in the tray in case the puppy has an accident in most cases though the animal will try not to soil in the same place they are sleeping if they are taken out to exercise on a regular basis. A young pup should never be left in a house unsupervised and most the time puppies enjoy the time to sleep so placing him in his crate when your not home is the best thing so they do not get into anything which is exactly what a puppy loves to do.

EAR TAPING

First you should know that ear taping is never an easy task and does take a lot of patience. Some puppies ears are slow to stand, this maybe because they are exceptionally large/ or the ear leather itself is thin. In any event they require a little more work to aid in the standing erect.

Begin, with shaving the ears completely, inside and out. Fist clean the inside the ear with alcohol and a cotton swab. Cut a piece of Backer Rod to fit the inside of the ear. You can purchase this at your local Home Depot store which will help in keeping the ears standing in place.

Next, wrap a strip of Extra strength Athletic tape around the base of the ear, making a bridge in the center to hold the ears up in place this is also very effective. If the puppy is new to taping they will most likely scratch at it. If any sores develop Please remove the tape and wait until it heals. Then try again, each puppies ears will go up at there own rate. Try a Wahl’s “Groomsman” Cordless Mustache/Beard Trimmer for shaving Available at most drugstores or Wal-Mart's for under Twenty-dollars.s because I am home all day however I highly recommend to crate your puppy or confine him/her in a small area so they don't get into things. And have a consistent routine this will really help with housetraining. We start our puppies on Wee-Wee pads however you have to remember they are still a puppy and not completely house trained. It is up to you to continue to work with your puppy after they leave here.
Feeding

Feeding

We feed our Cresteds Bil Jac. This is really good for the cresteds We have switched over to this because the stools are firmer, its all natural made with real chicken and rice which is cooked on low heat to keep all the vitamins and nutrients together. This food has been around for a very long time, and was made to be like the Raw Food Diet for dogs. Crested pups get 8-9 oz. (1 cup) I am a firm believer in QUALITY food. The old saying “You are what you eat” also applies to our pets. The ingredients used in premium food has no by products its made with real chicken, lamb, rice, and vegetables which makes it easier for your dog to digest there food. Premium foods are much healthier in comparison to products you can purchase at your local grocery store. You can purchase dog food at your local pet store or vet office. Spending a couple dollars more on your pets food could help expand there life span as well as giving them the proper nutrients to improve there coats, as well as living a much healthier life.

GENERAL CARE

Crested’s do lose their teeth, so don’t be alarmed like I was. Some Crested’s never get their teeth and some only get a few. Make sure you do regular brushing and get there checkups. There are long brushes and finger brushes I personally prefer the finger brushes because its easier to get in the mouth and not miss as much teeth. Last but not least, always dress your hairless for the weather! In cold weather make sure you put a coat on the hairless I like to dress mine in Fur Coats, Fleece Pajamas so they stay warm. Do not let them stay outside to long they can get FROSTBITE in the winter, and SUNBURN in the summer. Always use 45-55 sun block. Also if you notice Blackheads or Dry skin You may want to use Ives Peach scrub and a black head cream you would use on yourself. Always keep the hairless skin lotion up.
